Tale of the Secret Spring
A cave loomed dark and menacing. All around, evergreens shivered in the late fall wind while less fortunate trees dribbled off their foliage in a colorful display. The weather had already turned towards the bitter and the six village teens that stood before the cave sported a variety of fur and woolen garments to ward off the biting air. Snow had yet to fall, but it was just a matter of time.
The six teens stared into the gaping and dark opening with various levels of interest and anxiety. Behind them showing far less attention, were a pack of five dragons standing by with languid casualness bordering on catatonia. Hiccup had already su

They were loud, vulgar, and only bathed when forced. But in a small village you didn't get to choose your peers, or your potential mates. Even though it was a year or two away, she knew she'd have to get married some day, in the same way that she knew the sun would rise every morning: it wasn't something you needed to contemplate, you didn't even have to like it, it just was. "I am so bored." Ruffnut threw her head back in exaggeration so hard her helmet almost flew off. She lifted a hand just in time to settle in back down on her mass of thick blonde braids. She kicked out a foot covered in layers of skins sending a plume of snow ahead of her as she stomped through the woods, pulling her bear fur cloak tighter over her bony shoulders. The morning was cool and clear and bright, one of the last pleasant days expected as autumn shook off the remnants of summer and marched towards the cold desolation of winter. Some of the old timers were predicting snow by the end of the week. Hiccup hoped they were wrong as he casually rubbed the upper calf of his left leg; the dull ache that frequently interrupted his sleep these past few nights was likely to only get worse in the frigid temperatures and he was dreading experiencing his first winter with the injury.
An inquisitive black nose poked at his hand and he smiled in response. Affectionately he scr

Vikings had never needed much excuse to make merry and those days that celebrations were called for were embraced with a determination that was only outmatched by their willingness to battle. The great hall that had been carved out of the very mountain the village was built upon overflowed as every member of the village wished to honor the young married couple and pay their respects to the chief. Mead and ale flowed unendingly as venison and pork and fish and poultry were consumed in vast quantities.
Hiccup's mug was never allowed to be emptied for longer than a heartbeat, and all the partygoers took turns encouraging the new husband to dr

You know as well as I do that life in Berk isn't easy for anyone. We could be woken up at any moment by the angry cries of dragons, choking on the raging fires they left behind when they took any food they could haul away. Then there's the weather that devastates our island for months on end. Attempting to raise crops and livestock on what is essentially a floating mountain, or being separated from other people by no less than a day's travel by boat.
No, for any Viking living here is a challenge. For me, however, the challenges just seemed to go on and on. I could always imagine the things I wanted to do, but putting them to practice n
Darkness had descended on the island bringing with it a cold deep enough to sting bones. Snotlout's husky build didn't provide nearly enough insulation to protect against the biting chill. The dragons had already retreated back into the warmth of the island. He had walked up to the hole the Vikings had burst open earlier and peered inside, but except for the softest reddish glow, no light permeated, though he was certain he heard an inquisitive growl from the Nightmare. It was strange, but he already seemed to miss her and hoped she would come out in the morning and return to Berk with them.

Going out of town for a few days. I should be back by Saturday, but just in case I want to wish everyone a happy, bright New Year. :blowkiss:
So I've been watching "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic". I've seen the hoopla all over the net about it and thought it'd be right up my alley. Can't really say as I've fallen in love. It hasn't hit that inner chord with me with way other animated shows have (*coughPokemoncough* Seriously I have an embarrassing collection of Pikachu collectables ) but it is cute and not brain-stabbingly trite, and I have admittedly laughed out loud on several occasions so it'll stay on the DVR schedule.
But the really weird thing about the show is that I've realized that Fluttershy is basically me in condensed pony form:

The good news, though, is that I have a good chunk of the ending done  Unfortunately it got pretty violent  So we'll just have to see how that goes over.
In other news, I've discovered a new fiction archive called Archive of Our Own. It has some pretty neat features and seems to have a higher quality of work than certain other places that shall remain nameless. One feature I really like is the ability to give a story 'kudos', which is just basically
